| Position: Adult Basic Education/GED Faculty position |
Position Description: Peninsula College is recruiting for a full-time instructor to teach GED Test Preparation and Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes at Olympic Corrections Center (OCC). OCC is located 25 miles south of Forks, WA. Students are incarcerated adults who are generally scheduled to be released within the next five years. The ABE instructor provides classroom instruction in reading, math and writing that leads toward the completion of a GED certificate and helps students become more functional, productive and successful members of the community and society.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide lead instruction in basic literacy skills and in reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies for GED preparation to incarcerated adult males.
Administer Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) appraisal, pre- and post-test assessments.
Comply with policies and procedures of the Department of Corrections.
Develop curriculum and instructional strategies in a competency-based environment which acknowledges broad learning differences and challenges.
Maintain knowledge of current information in adult education.
Orient students to the objectives of the course, learning outcomes and assessment methods.
Develop course syllabi, handouts and materials supporting the instructional process.
Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback.
Review and recommend materials and equipment to program coordinator or dean.
Participate as part of a team of instructors who provide Corrections instruction in the Peninsula College district.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have:
A Master’s degree in Adult Education or related field. A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Adult Education or related field is required.
Two years successful teaching experience in basic skills, preferably at a community college.
Experience with computer applications for instructional purposes and strong computer literacy skills.
Experience working with the Department of Corrections.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and to communicate clearly with native and non-native English speakers.
A commitment to education that is student-centered and focused on learning.
The ability to work with adult males in a correctional setting with an awareness of re-entry issues relevant to the inmate population.

Physical Requirements: Instruction occurs in a state correctional facility where the potential for violence exists.
Work is typically performed in a classroom and lab which may require sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

Terms of Employment: Full-time faculty position: Approximately 30 hours of face to face instruction per week beginning January 4, 2010.
Work Site: Olympic Corrections Center approximately 25 miles south of Forks, WA.
Salary: Placement on full-time salary schedule based on documentable education and experience. The base salary ranges from $41,293 for a person with a Bachelor degree to $48,670 for a person with a Master’s degree and 16 years of teaching experience.
9-month, 175-day academic year appointment with possible summer contract.
Required to attend and pass Correctional Workers Core training.
Successful candidate must pass NCIC clearance.
Must be able to work cooperatively with DOC to ensure facility security.
