Position: Chemistry: tenure-track position

Position Description: 
Peninsula College, a progressive Washington State Community College, is one of the first community colleges in Washington authorized to offer a bachelor’s degree. The college is seeking applications from dedicated teacher-scholars to teach and provide instructional leadership in the Sciences. Applicants with teaching and research or industry experience in environmental science, green energy, biotechnology, and/or applied-health related fields are especially encouraged to apply. Position begins September 2010.

We are looking for a dynamic teacher-scholar who can communicate effectively with a highly diverse student population of science majors and new learners of chemistry alike. Primary teaching duties will be in developing and teaching undergraduate general and organic chemistry, chemistry-related environmental or health science courses, and lab/field internship or research supervision. The program will include majors and non-majors courses, in face-to-face, online, and hybrid class environments. The incumbent will also maintain and supervise the chemistry labs and associated equipment and materials. There are also opportunities to teach upper-level and graduate courses in associated University programs.

Peninsula College is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains in Port Angeles, Washington, overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island, Canada. The college enrolls approximately 10,000 full and part time associates and baccalaureate students on three campuses and is engaged in an impressive array of research and professional scholarship initiatives. The Science Division works hard to provide extensive internship and research opportunities for students in its programs, and has long been committed to an educational program that includes extensive involvement of undergraduate students in research as well as supporting continuing professional development for its faculty and staff members. Modern, research-grade instrumentation and facilities are available. Seeking extramural funding is encouraged; faculty and staff in the Division have active research grants from a variety of agencies, and are supported by a Grants Director and associated staff. Individuals with experience working collaboratively with business, government, and/or industry are especially encouraged to apply.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Teach the core chemistry courses for the Sciences Division and one course for the Allied Health Division;
  • Teach elective chemistry courses for the Sciences Division based on the incumbent’s specialty;
  • Organize and maintain chemistry labs and associated materials in a safe and legal manner;
  • Gather, organize, and/or create course materials that facilitate learning;
  • Provide expert learning opportunities to students in an atmosphere that promotes learning and in a manner consistent with college policies;
  • Contribute to the quality and growth of the science programs;
  • Assess student learning in Chemistry as part of the annual Academic Unit Plan and college accreditation process;
  • Engage in scholarly activity that complements and informs one’s teaching;
  • Have a clear vision for a scholarship agenda which would involve students;
  • Work with the Sciences Division Chair and Vice President of Instruction to develop retention strategies;
  • Advise students on programs and degree planning;
  • Participate in committee work supporting the college;
  • Work with regional science and/or industry community to develop successful internships and collaborative research or scholarly activity efforts.

    Qualifications: 
    The ideal candidate will:
  • Hold an earned Doctorate from an accredited university in Chemistry, Chemistry Education, or any related discipline, preferably with an emphasis any of the following: Environmental Science, Green Energy, Biotechnology, or Applied Health Sciences;
  • Have experience with use and maintenance of chemical instrumentation, organic, analytical, and biochemistry equipment and materials;
  • Have advising experience and evidence of effective and innovative teaching at an accredited university;
  • Have experience in curriculum development, administrative work, or community/student support;
  • Have exceptional teaching skills, with knowledge and use of diverse teaching methods, including a commitment to the use of computer technology in the learning environment, whether in face to face, online or hybrid classes;
  • Have enthusiasm for the subject matter which engages the student;
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff, and experience or a willingness to work with a highly diverse student population; and
  • Demonstrate experience (e.g., professional, collaborative research, etc.) in a business or industry.

  • Physical Requirements: 
    Work is typically performed in a classroom or lab which requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Work may also take place in a research environment.

    Terms of Employment: 
  • A full-time tenure-track faculty position beginning the 2010 Fall quarter; this is a nine-month academic year appointment.
  • Salary and Title: Position title and placement on the faculty salary schedule are based on documentable education and experience. The base salary ranges from $43,382 for a person with a Masters degree to $53,758 for a person with a PhD and 16 years of teaching experience.
  • Peninsula College contributes $745.00 per month to help employees defray the cost of insurance premiums that include coverage for medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability. In addition to these benefits, Peninsula College provides paid sick leave and a defined contribution retirement plan with matching employer contributions. Optional credit union and tax deferred annuity programs are also available.
