ENGL 90: FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH
Review of sentence structure, grammar, usage, and punctuation. Introduction to essay writing. Placement based ASSET or COMPASS score.
ENGL 100: WRITING IN THE WORKPLACE
Composition course designed specifically for two-year professional technical students. Students produce a variety of professional technical documents, such as letters, memos, reports, work orders, and resumes. Review of grammar, usage, and mechanics. ASSET or COMPASS score determines credits. Prerequisite: Keyboarding skills or permission of instructor.
ENGL& 101: ENGLISH COMPOSITION I
Active reading, effective writing, and critical thinking, using subjective and objective approaches. Introduction to research techniques. Prerequisite: Score of 45 or more on ASSET placement test in writing skills, 77% or more on COMPASS placement test, or Pass in ENGL 090, 091, or 092.
ENGL& 102: ENGLISH COMPOSITION II
Reading and writing using analytical and critical approaches. One or more research papers. Builds on concepts introduced in ENGL 101. Prerequisite: 2.0 or better in ENGL 101.
ENGL 175: INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITNG
Beginning script-writing for film and television. Combination small lecture/workshop approach focusing on techniques, formats, and structure of scripts: plot and charactor development. Co-listed with MEDIA 180-183.
ENGL 180-182, 280-282: LITERARY MAGAZINE PRODUCTION I-VI
Planning and production of college literary magazine, Tidepools. Fall quarter (ENGL 180,280): soliciting student contributions, conducting a community-wide contest, designing the magazine. Winter quarter (ENGL 181,281): judging material and producing camera-ready copy for printing. Spring quarter (ENGL 182,282): marketing finished product and organizing a reading by contest winners and contributors.
ENGL& 235: TECHNICAL WRITING
Emphasis on clear, concise, correct writing as practiced in business, industry, and government. Focus on purpose, audience, style, and format in writing reports, proposals, letters, resumes, descriptions, and instructions. Systematic review of grammar, usage, and mechanics. Prerequisite: English 111 or permission of instructor.
ENGL& 236/237: CREATIVE WRITING/ADVANCED CREATIVE WRITING
Beginning and advanced writing in fiction and poetry, other modes by student request. Workshop approach with discussion of work by class members and instructor. Reading of contemporary fiction, poetry, and rhetoric. Prerequisite: ENGL 101 or permission of instructor.
INTEGRATED STUDIES, LINKED COURSES, AND LEARNING COMMUNITIES
