Alive Together: New and Selected Poems

Alive Together: New and Selected Poems. By Lisel Mueller. Louisiana State University Press, 223 pp., $24.95; paperback, $17.95.

Now that Mueller has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, this senior poet is getting the attention she has long deserved. Her poems are profound, accessible and unpretentious. Many are autobiographical, tracing her life from the time when her family had to flee Germany through almost a half century of a good marriage. She tends to draw back from explicit expressions of the sort that critics would label "religious poetry." Yet she draws upon deep inner resources and speaks to the heart and the head
