Research

Members of the Center are involved with a variety of research projects, and often open these projects to student participation. Some of our major research focal points are listed below, but more information can be found on the individual pages of our team.© Janet Lamont

Currently, we are directly involved with a variety of public health and emergency management progjects for Clallam County, Port Angeles Fire Department, Clallam County Fire Districts 2 and 3, and Bainbridge Island Fire Department; are analyzing historical snowpack for the Olympic Mountains; coordinate and participate in research associated with the Elwha Project, the world’s largest dam removal/river restoration project; and, in conjunction with the North Olympic Peninsula Resource Conservation and Development Council, are working on a NASA Project to develop and test a Solutions Network for streamflow forecasting.

Dwight Barry serves as the Coordinator of the Elwha Research Consortium RCN. He also directs the NASA Operations Center. Dwight's expertise is in applied statistics, GIS, land management, and emergency management, and has recently begun working more in public health and geomedicine.

Brian Hauge serves as the Director of Undergraduate Research. As a wildlife biologist, Brian's research interests are in improving science education, mesocarnivores along the Elwha River, and he continues long-term work on turtle biology in central Florida.

Dan Underwood is investigating the impact of forest management practices on ecosystem response, particularly associated with the prey base of the northern spotted owl.

Jack Ganzhorn is assessing the fish productivity and habitat of the Elwha River, other regional rivers, and the nearshore environment of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. He works with Anne Shaffer (Coastal Watershed Institute) on nearshore fisheries assessment.

Jeff Mauger is writing a book on the Ozette Project.
