  • C-AA 012 DRAW IN A DAY
    Yes, you can learn to draw! This one-day course, limited only to beginners, will introduce you to basic drawing and develop your natural ability. Bring a 2B drawing pencil, 16x20 or larger sketch book, and your lunch. Washington State clock hours offered.
     
  • C-AA 013 COLOR AND COMPOSITION
    Understanding color and composition is essential to developing an artistic voice, strengthening your work, and knowing how to resolve visual problems. This Saturday course will combine hands-on experience with discussion, demonstration, and visuals. Bring the color media you have the most experience using paint, colored pencil or pastel; an appropriate surface to work on; and your lunch. All levels welcome.     Class will focus on techniques used to capture transparency of flower petals, luminosity of colors and textures such as veins. Please bring white paper and colored pencil. Washington State clock hours offered.

    Class will focus on the Scientific drawing of aquatic animals such as fish using fine blending techniques. Please bring white paper and colored pencil. Washington State clock hours offered.
     
  • C-AA 037 ANTIQUE ROSE DRAWING
    In this class we will learn how to develop the vintage look of botanical drawing by blending through dark colors using original vintage prints as subjects. Please bring antique white paper and colored pencil. Washington State clock hours offered.
     
  • C-AA 038 RENAISSANCE OLD MASTER
    Workshop will be a complete study of how the "old masters" developed fine shading, blending layering techniques using Renaissance images of the Madonna. Please bring antique white paper and colored pencil. Washington State clock hours offered.
     
  • C-AA 077 ART: SELF DIRECTED STUDY
    If you sometimes confront a creative block, or are unable to determine why your piece has problems, this course is for you if you are an intermediate or advanced student. Artists will determine their own focus, produce new work, and explore new concepts or techniques to further their current work. Each session will include individual guidance, group discussion, and critique. Open to any painting, drawing, mixed media, oil pastel, or soft pastel medium the student is using.   • C-AA 078 EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING
    Drawing develops greater awareness of the visual world, sensitivity to materials and a wide range of possibilities in style, media and expression. This course will emphasize creative experimentation in the use of materials, composition, texture, shape, color, value, space and line.   • C-AB 005 PAINTING LAYERS
    In this class we will explore the use of layers of paint and paper and other objects to create works of art. We will work with realism and abstraction. Bring your old water media paintings or pastels or new painting surfaces and we will experiment with paint or paper to make new paintings.   • C-AB 011 WORKING IN SERIES II
    This class will be a bit different from the first Work in Series. Students will be doing a series of paintings of your choice. Students will be working on treatment of form. In other words the paintings will all be different but painted in the same method. For example all the paintings will be done in primary colors or all warm paintings with 10% cool. You will need to work from photographs or your own drawings. Your choice. This class will take some thought and prep. There will be information on why artist work in series. We will critique and discuss the work. Students will have individual attention and help. For more information call instructor at 681-0895. Students must have some experience and have some interest in working in series.   • C-AB 054 INTRO TO OIL PASTELS
    Oil pastels are versatile, easy to use, and produce beautiful translucent color. Learn basic oil pastel techniques and color mixing in this Saturday course. New and previous students welcome.   • C-AC 002 ADVANCED STAINED GLASS
    A class for those who know the basics and want a chance to refine their skills and start more complex projects, including lampshades. Help with individual projects, lots of tips. Students provide their own materials. Washington State clock hours offered.
     
  • C-AC 005 BEGINNING FUSED GLASS
    Beginning class; no glass-cutting experience required. Basic instruction on cutting, compatibility, and design will lead to almost instant gratification. Art work will be fired off-site and returned to class each week. Students provide their own project glass; wait until the first demo before deciding on your direction!   • C-AC 006 ADVANCED FUSED GLASS
    Advanced fused glass: Students need to have experience with the basics of fusing. Demos and discussions will be on advanced techniques and trouble-shooting for complex projects. Students provide their own glass. Projects will be fired off-site. Washington State clock hours offered.
     
  • C-AC 010 VITREOUS GLASS PAINTING
    Vitreous glass painting is most often seen in church windows. Historically the most frequent use for glass painting has been the depiction of faces and figures in religious art glass.   • C-AE 008 DRAWING W/MIXED MEDIA
    Try a new spin on developing your drawing skills. this class is designed to help you loosen up and try new mediums. Have some fun as you warm up with creative left and right brain exercises. Use and experiment with watercolor and India ink washes, pen and stick, gouache, watercolor crayon and conte crayon. The study of line, shape, value and form will be integrated into class studies.     Matting Basics for Art work and Photography. How-to's for mat cutting: measuring, materials, equipment - choices. A lengthy demonstration of how to treat each type of artwork, what materials to use and easy methods to cut basic mats.   • C-AF 001 JAZZ IMPROV WORKSHOP
    Designed to give instrumentalists the tools to play contemporary Jazz solos ranging from the simple to the complex, the first hour of this class will focus on techniques, followed by a two-hour practice/playing session. The material presented in class is suitable for both the serious practitioner or the player who just wants to have fun and improve skills. Washington State clock hours offered.

    Have you always wanted to write fiction but didn't know where to start? Do you have an idea for a book? Romance, Mystery, Horror?   • C-AI 021 WRITING POPULAR FICTION 2
    Participants should have completed part 1, or have a rough draft for instructor and class members to read and critique. Techniques such as foreshadowing, imagery, strengthening conflict and creating three dimensional characters will take your manuscript to the next stage.   • C-AI 050 FILM NOIR II
    A follow-up to last year's Introduction to Film Noir, this class will continue our exploration of femme fatales, flawed heroes, shadowy pasts, rain-soaked streets, crimes gone wrong, and labyrinth-like cities in films from the 1940s and 1950s. Viewing cult classics like "Gun Crazy" and "Pick Up on South Street", we will explore noir as reflection of post-WWII America and discuss common motifs, recurring themes, and the rogue's gallery of noir characters. There is no prerequisite for this class. For those who took last year's class, this is an opportunity to look deeper into the noir universe. For those new to noir, the class will serve as a good introduction to noir's stylish and perverse world. Washington State clock hours offered.
     
  • C-AI 051 FILM NOIR
    An exploration of femme fatales, flawed heroes, shadowy pasts, rain-soaked streets, and crimes gone wrong. Features a whole new set of dark masterpieces from the 1940s and 1950s! We'll view and discuss one film a week, with an emphasis on key directors and their styles. Films will include John Huston's "Asphalt Jungle", Robert Siodmak's "Criss Cross" and Abraham Polonsky's "Force of Evil". There is no prerequisite for this class. For those who took last year's class, this is an opportunity to look deeper into the noir universe.     Work less and accomplish more with QuickBooks! Learn to navigate Quick Books software and utilize this accounting program in a small business environment. Topics include accounting basics, chart of accounts, creating estimates and invoices, recording income, maintaining customer and vendor accounts, writing and printing checks, using registers, bank account reconciliations and printing reports.     The goal of this course is to help students become proficient in communicating in a variety of survival situations (getting food, transportation, lodging, making travel plans, and discussing interests and activIties with native Spanish speakers.     This class is an introduction to Spanish focusing on verbal communication in everyday situations. Students will learn vocabulary, basic grammar structure, and have the opportunity for verbal practice in a variety of participatory activities.   • C-SF 003 THE WILDS OF RUSSIA
    Join expert photographer and naturalist, Coke Smith for another fantastic photo-based seminar series, this time covering the wildest places in the amazing country of Russia. In this series, travel with Coke to such wilderness areas as Kamchatka, Commander Islands, and the Kuril Islands. You will also be able to join on an exciting Siberian Tiger trek in the Primorya region of the Russian Far East. And no journey would be complete without sailing and trekking in Lake Baikal!     Learn to capture the fascinating beauty of plants. A step-by-step guide in how to create a botanical, aesthetically pleasing, portrait. This class will focus on techniques of drawing plants in colored pencils and water color. Choose plant project.     This fine arts class focuses on the use of colored pencil and water-soluble pencils, unique use of colorless blenders, solvents, and colored surfaces as well as other colored pencil techniques.   • S-AA 075 SUMMER ART: INSIDE OUTSIDE
    A five-week course for intermediate and advanced students who have taken one or more drawing courses and are experienced using any color media; oil, acrylic, watercolor, colored pencils, chalk or oil pastels. Students will learn how to 1) produce working drawings outdoors for future larger indoor work 2) make color renderings outdoors as resources for studio work 3) execute a completed work outdoors 4) work from memory and imagination 5) develop a sketchbook-journal as reference for future work. All classes will include one-on-one discussion and group critique. Most class sessions will be outdoors for part or all of the class. Students provide their own materials and transportation within a few miles of the school.   • S-E 001 NATIONAL PARKS GEOLOGY
    History has created the dramatic landscapes found in our national parks, monuments, and seashores. Take a look at the geologic processes that have influenced these landscapes and answer such questions as why Hawaii National Park volcanoes look so different from Mount Rainier, why Yellowstone National Park has geysers and hot springs, and why the coastline of Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the east coast is so different from the Point Reyes National Seashore coastline on the west coast.
