Find drawing faces a challenge? This is the class for you. Learn very simple steps that will boost your ability to portray people from a professional artist with hundreds of portraits under his belt. C-AA 076 USING COLOR IN DRAWING

With the addition of color the expressive potential of drawing is limited only by your imagination. This course presents many possibilities with ideas and materials. Using water soluble colored pencils, chalk pastel, charcoal, graphite pencil, ink, pen, brush, crayon, felt pen and more, we will begin with information on color and how to produce variation in hue, value and intensity with each medium, working on a variety of surfaces Subjects will include still life, imagination, your photos and other visual and verbal prompts. Each session includes demonstration, individual assistance, concluding with a display and discussion of the days work.

C-AB 013 LINE AND BRUSH

Approach the creative process with your true art spirit. Break the barriers and experiment with pen (water-soluble), pen and India ink, stick, brush, crayon and watercolor. Put drawing and painting together and add a new dimension to your work. This is a quick way to sketch visual notes and add depth to your drawing and paintings. Great to give your visual energy a jump start. For all levels.

Soft (Chalk) pastels can be either a drawing or painting medium, depending on how you use them. In this course you will learn both drawing and painting techniques, color theory, paper selection, and how to preserve your work. Materials extra.

C-AE 050 MARDI GRAS MASKS

Create a unique signature piece of wearable art. Build, sculpt, and embellish a custom fitted plaster mask. Built on your own face, these can be displayed or worn for special events. Wear something comfortable to class - basic materials supplied.

C-AF 005 CONGA DRUMS

Rhythm is almost universally regarded as the most powerful aspect of music. This is the first in a series of courses that will explore the amazing rhythms that have come from Cuba and other Caribbean countries. Conga drums will be emphasized, but other percussion instruments will be introduced. Full-sized conga drums are highly recommended. Some drums will be available for students to use. C-AI 019 REAL LIFE INTO FICTION

Writers lead double lives. As participants and observers, we make notes and gather material, all possible grist for fiction. Learn how to mine your life for fiction potential. Shift through memories, recall details, alter facts, play "what if...?" and transform real people into fiction characters. Class includes exercises and idea starters to generate material for a short story or scene for a novel. Working with this raw mosaic, you'll create a short manuscript, for review in a read and critique session.

This Quarter we will be playing homage to JACK LEMMON. One of the screen's most beloved and versatile performers, Jack Lemmon is remembered chiefly for his brilliant performances in comedy. This retrospective will present one film per week, and will not only feature Mr. Lemmon in some of his most prominent roles, but also some of his lesser-known (and frequently surprising) portrayals of characters that run the gamut from comical to tragic.

S-AF 040 HISTORY IN FILM

This quarter we look at ROMANTICISM IN MUSIC: A history of Self-Expression. The Romantic Period in music was one in which composers began to abandon long-held principles of form, melody, and harmony in an attempt to express their innermost feelings -- their impressions of literature, plays, nature, and even their personal lives. Using recorded music and an occasional illustrative film, this course will focus on the chamber music, symphonic music and opera of the 19th century.
