Understanding color and composition is essential to developing an artistic voice, strengthening your work, and knowing how to resolve visual problems. This Saturday course will combine hands-on experience with discussion, demonstration, and visuals. Bring the color media you have the most experience using paint, colored pencil or pastel; an appropriate surface to work on; and your lunch. All levels welcome. The art of botanical drawing is a time-honored art. Its origins go back 2,000 years to the time of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. This particular class will study the techniques and styles of the old masters. We shall use antique botanical prints and aged paper.

Learn to use watercolor in an airbrush application and lots of techniques for working large areas successfully. Create soft or complex backgrounds by applying layers of pigment without a brush. This can be used as the method to the complete painting or as a means to support brush detailing for final resolution and adding the "Artist's Touch."

Enrich your travels by learning how to draw in your own sketch book. Miriam Lansdon will show you how to use watercolor washes, and pen and ink to illustrate buildings, landscapes, and unique places. There are many different creative opportunities in glass fusion. This class introduces you to the basics of successful glass cutting and firing. An exploration of femme fatales, flawed heroes, shadowy pasts, rain-soaked streets, and crimes gone wrong. Features a whole new set of dark masterpieces from the 1940s and 1950s! We'll view and discuss one film a week, with an emphasis on key directors and their styles. Films will include John Huston's "Asphalt Jungle", Robert Siodmak's "Criss Cross" and Abraham Polonsky's "Force of Evil". There is no prerequisite for this class. For those who took last year's class, this is an opportunity to look deeper into the noir universe. In the years following World War II, filmmakers began looking even more closely at the dark side of the human psyche. The term film noir, defined by Wikipedia as a genre that explored, among other things, "moral ambiguity and sexual motivation," yielded some of the richest cinema to come out of Hollywood, and its influence spread to other countries, France in particular. We will explore one film per week and be treated to menace and mayhem courtesy of Richard Widmark, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and others.
