Pirates sign 2 national champions

PORT ANGELES – Peninsula College soccer coach Andrew Chapman this week signed five very talented recruits, including two national champions out of Reno and a former member of the Venezuelan Junior National Team.

Alex Martinez and Irvin Somera, who’s Sagebrush United team won the National U.S. Club Championship and the National President’s Cup, signed letters of intent to play for the Pirates next fall.

Martinez, a 5-9 center midfielder, played at North Valley High School in Reno where he was named the Washoe County Most Valuable Player, he was a three-time winner of the Sheels Athlete of the Month Award and his team earned two division championships.

“Alex plays with great pace and moves the ball well,” said Peninsula College coach Andrew Chapman.  “He is very competitive and can play multiple positions. He likes to defend and attack, which sometimes is a hard combo to get with a player.”

Somera, a 5-11 defensive midfielder, played at Spanish Springs High in Reno. The four-year varsity player was named First Team All-League three times and was named Midfielder of the Year in 2010 and 2011.

“Irvin has great size and defends really well,” Chapman said. “He wins balls really well and distributes out of the middle with ease.  He has great vision and likes to switch the ball.”

Arturo Oberto, a 5-10 goal keeper from Dimond High School in Anchorage also signed a letter of intent to play for the Pirates. Oberto played three years for Dimond and was named to the Alaska All-State Team twice.  He was also on the Alaska State ODP team and named to the Regional Pool in 2010. Before moving to Alaska he played for the U15 National team in Venezuela.

“Arturo is a great shot stopper who really fly’s around the field,” Chapman said. “He distributes with both feet very accurately, which is something you normally don’t get from goalkeepers.  He loves to have his teams pass the ball to his feet.”

Others to sign letters of intent to play for the Pirate men include Alan Millington and Kyle Campbell.

Millington is a 6-0 defender from West Valley High School in Fairbanks, AK. He was named to the All-Conference Team last season and he served as captain for his club team that won four state championships.

“Alan is a very aggressive player.  He controls the defense and has good speed,” Chapman said. “He always seems to be in the right spot.”

Campbell is a 5-10 center defender from Reed High in Sparks, Nevada. He was a three-year captain and MVP of a club team that won the Nevada State Championship in 2010. He was also captain of his high school team and also played for the Nevada ODP team for two years and the Regional ODP team one year.

“K.C. actually graduated high school two years ago and is a little older than most incoming players,” Chapman said. “He is very strong and vocal.  We are looking for him to come in and make a big impact on the leadership of our team.”

Pirates settle for third place in NWAACC finals

TUKWILA - Soccer fans arrived at the Starfire Sports Complex, home of the NWAACC Final Four, in anticipation of a Sunday championship matching No. 1 Peninsula against No. 2 Highline, which happens to be a repeat of the 2010-11 championship, which saw Peninsula defeat Highline in an overtime shootout. Unfortunately for both programs, their semifinal opponents turned out to be spoilers. On the heels of No. 6 Olympic's 1-0 upset over second-ranked Highline Saturday afternoon came No. 4  Chemeketa's stunning 1-0 upset over the top-ranked Peninsula men. The Storm used a relentless defense and outstanding overall team speed to keep the unbeaten Pirates off balance - and it was a match that could have gone either way. Chemeketa's Brian Avila got behind the Pirate defense just 22 minutes into the match and booted a shot under a charging Pirate keeper Jared Wilson for what proved to be the only goal of the match. The Pirates battered the Storm back line, and keeper Alberto Gomez, for 90 minutes, but could not find the net. Saturday's semifinal loss left the Pirates in a share of third place and left players and fans in emotional turmoil, as their dream of a repeat championship evaporated into the cold, dark Tukwila night. It was the final night in a black and gold uniform for the NWAACC's most exciting player, Miguel Gonzalez, as well as teammates Jared Wilson, Prince Ash, Matt Stefanko, Adam Skowron, Jacob Campbell, Anthony Aguilar, Mums Chowdhury, Brian Holguin, Jake Hughes, Tyler Hindmarch, Dustin Walsh, Yan Gioseffi, Jeff Mullen and Michel Carbon.

Gonzalez MVP, six named to NW All-Star Team

VANCOUVER - Sophomore sensation Miguel Gonzalez was named MVP and five of his teammates were named to the Northwest All-Star Team, as announced today by the NWAACC office. The honor marks a repeat for Gonzalez, who was MVP of the West Division in 2010 as well. Joining him on the NW All-Star roster for 2011 are Dean Gaynor (forward), Daniel Gonzalez (midfielder), Jeff Mullen and Dustin Walsh (defender) and Jared Wilson (goalkeeper).

Peninsula men roll over Everett in quarterfinal

PORT ANGELES - Everett was no match for the top-ranked and defending NWAACC champion Pirates, who rallied for five quick goals and then rested their starters in a 5-0 rout over the Trojans before a big playoff crowd at Sigmar Field. It was fitting that Peninsula's sophomore sensation Miguel Gonzalez scored a hat trick in his final appearance at Sigmar Field, the first of those perhaps the most spectacular of his storied career. It was 20 minutes into the match, the Pirates were leading 2-0 on two goals by Dean Gaynor, and the Yelm High grad found himself on a breakaway. He drilled the ball right at the Trojan keeper, who blocked the shot. The ball rebounded all the way out to the top of the box where Gonzalez threw his body upside down, striking the ball with a bicycle kick that caried over the head of the keeper and into the top right corner of the goal. The Pirate cannon fired for the third time in the match, but it could not be heard over the roar of the crowd. Gonzalez went on to scored two more for the 34th goal of his season, and it was 5-0 Pirates at the 30-minute mark of the first half. Coach Andrew Chapman then pulled Gonzalez, and most of his starters, playing out the match with his bench to record the 5-0 victory. Jeff Mullen, Yan Gioseffi, Daniel Gonzalez and Tyronne Warren were credited with assists as the Pirates will take an unbeaten 18-0-2 record into the NWAACC Final Four. The Pirates will practice at the Starfire Sports Complex on Friday, attend the NWAACC Soccer Banquet Friday night at the tournament hotel (Bellevue Red Lion) and then tackle Chemeketa at 6:00 Saturday night in their NWAACC Semifinal.

Pirates host Spokane, Everett in quarterfinals

PORT ANGELES – Peninsula College has emerged as a men’s and women’s soccer powerhouse in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges – and the Pirates hope to parlay 2011 West Division championships into NWAACC titles beginning Saturday.

The Pirates host NWAACC quarterfinal playoff matches Saturday at Sigmar Field where they can punch their own ticket to the Final Four, set for Nov. 19-20 at the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila. The women play Spokane at noon and the men tackle Everett at 2:00.

For the women, Saturday’s match marks a rematch of last year’s first round playoff, where the Sasquatch stopped the first-year program in its tracks in a 5-0 shutout at a sloppy Civic Field. This year, however, the Pirates are stronger, faster and deeper than they were in 2010. The PC women are ranked No. 3 in the NWAACC, they won the West with a 14-1-1 record, they are 15-2-3 overall and are unbeaten at Sigmar Field.

The Pirate scoring attack is spread out among seven or more players, led by the school-record eight goals from Shelby Solomon (Fairbanks, AK), seven from Jackie Rodgers (Seattle), six from Kelsie Ng (Waipahu, Hawaii), and five each from Kirah Kanari (Perth, Australia) and Tabitha Bare (Wasilla, AK). The Pirates have scored 51 goals this season and given up just 11. Goal keeper Krystal Daniels (Kent) has recorded a school record 9 shutouts.

The Spokane women (11-4-0, 15-5-0), who are led by the 23 goals from Alli Floyd and 18 from Nikki Caudill, are ranked No. 2 in the NWAACC, behind East champion Walla Walla. The Sasquatch have put the ball in the net 73 times and have given up 22 goals. While the Pirates haven’t lost since Sept. 17, the Spokane women have lost four of their last eight matches.

“We began the season with three important goals in mind: win the West division, play our best soccer in November and win an NWAACC championship,” said head coach Kanyon Anderson. “We knew there would be big hurdles along the way and this Spokane team is the biggest hurdle so far.  Saturday will be a fantastic opportunity for us, and we are looking forward to seeing how good we can be.”

The Pirate men, meanwhile, have gone wire to wire as the top-ranked team in the NWAACC – and they would like nothing more than to finish with three straight wins to claim back-to-back NWAACC championships. Peninsula went 11-0-2 to claim a hat trick of West Division titles (3 straight) and have posted a 17-0-2 overall record.

The Pirates boast the No. 1 scorer in the NWAACC in sophomore Miguel Gonzalez of Yelm, who has tallied a Pirate record 31 goals. He also has 10 assists. Dean Gaynor of Ireland has 12 goals and 10 assists, Sean Prizeman of Ireland has 8 goals and Sergio Oliveira of Brazil has 6. Daniel Gonzalez, younger brother of Miguel, leads the NWAACC with 14 assists and Dustin Walsh of Port Angeles has 6. The Pirates have 11 shutouts this season, most of those recorded by last year’s championship MVP Jared Wilson, a sophomore out of Anchorage, AK.

As a team, Peninsula leads the NWAACC with 70 goals, while giving up a conference-leading 12.

Peninsula and Everett played back on Sept. 21 at Sigmar Field where the Trojans suffered a 7-0 shutout at the hands of the Pirates, their worst loss of the season.

“While it is great what these guys have done so far, winning the division and not losing a game this year, the men agree that they haven’t really done anything yet and really want the NWAACC title,” head coach Andrew Chapman said. “We are hoping we can stay healthy and continue to do what has made us great so far this year.”

Admission to Saturday’s playoff matches is free.

Pirates finish unbeaten regular season with 4-0 win at BC

BELLEVUE - For those who follow NWAACC men's soccer, it was no surprise to see Peninsula in the thick of things at the end of the regular season. What is different this year, however, is that the 2011 Pirates went unbeaten in regular season play, concluding with a 4-0 win at Bellevue Saturday, for the first time in school history, they won their third straight West Division championship and they were ranked No. 1 from wire to wire. The PC men will host the winner of Wednesday's Treasure Valley vs. Everett first round playoff in the quarterfinal round, set for 2:00 Saturday at Sigmar Field on the PC campus. The Pirates, who finished 11-0-2 in conference play and 17-0-2 overall, got off to a slow start against Bellevue, as Dean Gaynor's goal off an assist from Dustin Walsh stood as the only score of the first half. The Pirates then broke it open in the second half, getting goals from Miguel Gonzalez, Gaynor and Mums Chodhurry, and assists from Gaynor and Pirzeman (2). "It was great to get this win before the playoffs," coach Andrew Chapman said. "We played well and came away without any injuries."

Pirates lead NWAACC with 10 on All-Academic Team

PORT ANGELES – The Peninsula College soccer program is not only dominating the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges on the soccer field, but they are excelling in the classroom as well.

Ten members of the Peninsula College soccer program were named to the women’s and men’s NWAACC All-Academic Teams, as announced Wednesday by the NWAACC office in Vancouver.

The 10 Pirate sophomores represent the most of any college in the Washington/Oregon conference. They include Tabitha Bare, Jessica Farrell, Kimberly Jones and Ellen Rodgers from the third-ranked and West Division champion women’s team, as well as Michel Carbon, Yan Gioseffi, Miguel Gonzalez, Jake Hughes, Jeff Mullen and Adam Skowron from the NWAACC’s top-ranked men’s team.

“We have student athletes from all over the United States, and from all over the world, and they unite under three common goals: to be good students, to be good citizens and to win championships,” said Director of Athletics Rick Ross. “Our coaches recruit students who value those goals and we work hard to promote them throughout their athletic experience here at Peninsula. I’m very proud of this All-Academic recognition and, coupled with our efforts on the field and in our community, it confirms that our coaches and our athletes want to be NWAACC leaders in every category.”

Pirates pull off miracle to stay in West title hunt

PORT ANGELES - In what had to be the most dramatic finish for a home soccer match in Peninsula's 11-year soccer history, the Pirates pulled a rabbit out of a hat to somehow defeat Olympic 3-2 and maintain control in their quest to defend their West Division championship. It was top-ranked Peninsula, at home where they haven't lost this year, against a very talented and playoff-bound Olympic Ranger team - and this one was hotly contested. Olympic shocked PC fans by taking a 1-0 lead just 23 minutes in - and that lone score was looking to become a final as time was running out on the Pirates. The PC men, however, seemed to shift from drive to overdrive, while their coaching staff changed formations, and it was the NWAACC's best player, Miguel Gonzalez, who put the energized team on his back, refusing to lose. Gonzalez took a pass from Dustin Walsh and blasted it into the right corner of the Ranger goal to tie the score with just 9 minutes to play. While fans were doing math to determine what a tie might do to their West Division title chances, Olympic again responded with a shocking goal to take a 2-1 lead with 7 minutes remaining. The Pirates then struck right back. A shot by Daniel Gonzalez rebounded outside the box where Walsh, moving up from his defender position, bombing a rocket past OC keeper Christian Valdez to tie it a 2-2 with 4 minutes left as a huge PC crowd went wild. With all fans on their feet and the match into the final 3 minutes, the Pirates pulled off the impossible. Daniel Gonzalez put a perfect touch on a pass behind the Ranger back line and his older brother Miguel ran it down, chipped it past a charging Valdez, caught up to the ball and tapped it home to complete the miracle victory as his teammates and the crowd was in a frenzy. The win keeps Peninsula (10-0-2, 16-0-2) in the driver's seat to win the West with a 4-point lead over Highline. Should the Pirates beat Bellevue Saturday at Samamish High School, they will defend their title and earn a first-round playoff bye. For the game, the Pirates outshot Olympic 12-11 with most of PC's shots coming late. Jared Wilson had another brilliant match to prevent the explosive Rangers from doing even more damage. In addition to the Gonzalez brothers, Walsh and Wilson, also playing well for the Pirates were Tyrone Warren, Brian Holguin, Jeff Mullen, Matt Stefanko, and Yan Gioseffi.

Top-ranked Pirates fit to be tied

DES MOINES - Round 2 of the NWAACC's epic battle between top-ranked Peninsula and second-ranked Highline ended in a draw. The road hasn't been kind to the men in gold as of late. While they remained unbeaten following Wednesday's 0-0 match at Highline, they failed to gain ground on the team that is breathing down their necks in the race for the West Division championship. To Peninsula's credit, the Pirates were not at full strength, with a handful of starters out, most due to injuries. To Highline's credit, the small, wet T-bird field did not give the Pirates room to operate and they could not repeat the 3-1 victory they scored on their home pitch just a few weeks ago. In fact, if this was a title fight, the judges might have scored the first half in Highline's favor. The Pirates picked up the pace at the offensive end in the second half, but neither team could score. Pirate sophomore keeper Jared Wilson, who already owns the career shutout record, broke his single season shutout mark with his ninth, but he had to work for it. Also helping preserve the tie were defenders Jeff Mullen, Dustin Walsh and Yan Gioseffi. The Pirates (9-0-2, 15-0-2) host Olympic Saturday for their final home match of the regular season.

Tacoma rallied for tie against Pirates

TACOMA - It was inevitible that someone would eventually blemish Peninsula's unblemished record - and it happened Saturday in Tacoma where the Titans overcame a 3-1 Pirate lead to hand the NWAACC's top-ranked team a 4-4 tie. Peninsula got goals from Dean Gaynor, Miguel Gonzalez, Justin Skowron (his first as a Pirate) and Daniel Gonzalez, but could not hold off the hosts on their small, wet grass field. The Pirates recorded three assists in the match, all from the Gonzalez family, as Daniel Gonzalez contributed to two goals and Miguel to a third. The Pirates (9-0-1, 15-0-1) travel to Highline for a rematch of the NWAACC's No. 1 and No. 2 teams.

Top-ranked Pirates too much for Bellevue

PORT ANGELES - It's been common for the road to the West Division title to go through Bellevue, but the defending conference and NWAACC champion Pirates are in the fast lane this year and proved to be too much for the visiting Bulldogs in a 4-0 romp at Sigmar Field. Dean Gaynor scored the first two goals of the match, the first coming off a rebound and the second off an assist from Tyrone Warren. That 2-0 score stood through halftime, as the Bulldogs were keeping a very close eye on the NWAACC's leading scorer, Miguel Gonzalez. The PC soph, however, found a crease in the Bulldog defense to blast the ball into the right side of the net at the 70-minute mark for his 27th goal of the season. The score was assisted by Sean Prizeman. Gonzalez then returned the favor, dishing the ball to Prizeman, who put one in the BC net with eight minutes to play. While the score indicates a rout, those who watched Wednesday's match would say otherwise. Peninsula outshot Bellevue 18-14, but the 'Dogs had numerous opportunities to score. Pirate keeper Jared Wilson was flying all over the box and recorded 10 saves, many of them spectacular, to more than earn the shutout. Peninsula got another strong defensive performance out of Dustin Walsh and Jeff Mullen, as well as some outstanding midfield play from Daniel Gonzalez and Justin Skowron. The Pirates (9-0-0, 15-0-0) travel to Tacoma Saturday.

Pirates hold off third-place Olympic 2-0

BREMERTON - The Rangers are quietly having a very good year and Pirate fans were worried about a let-down after Saturday's monumental win over Highline, but Miguel Gonzalez, Jared Wilson and the rest of the sophomore leaders would have nothing of it, rising to drop Olympic 2-0 Wednesday. Gonzalez scored both goals, one in each half, assisted by Tyrone Warren and Jacob Campbell - and that was all the Pirates needed. Wilson recorded his eighth shutout. "Jared had some great saves for us today," coach Andrew Chapman said. "The field was a little small for us but we were able to still pass and move the ball around." The top-ranked Pirates improved to 8-0 in West Division play and 14-0 overall. Peninsula is off this weekend and returns home Wednesday to host third-place Bellevue.

Pirates edge Highline in battle of top-ranked teams

PORT ANGELES - It was a repeat of the 2010 NWAACC championship match, it was No. 1 vs. No. 2 and it was all a huge soccer crowd hoped it would be, as the NWAACC's top-ranked Pirates stopped the second-ranked Highline T-Birds 3-1 in a hard-fought NWAACC West Division soccer battle. Highline struck first on a goal by Darwin Jones, who broke through the PC defense and booted the ball under a charging Pirate keeper Jared Wilson just six minutes into the match. The Pirates responded just three minutes later when the NWAACC's leading goal scorer, sophomore sensation Miguel Gonzalez, took a pass from Dean Gaynor, and put it in the T-Birds' net to make it 1-1. Gonzalez then struck again, just one minute later, blasting a shot past keeper Brian Murray into the corner of the Highline goal. That score, his 24th of the season, came off an assist from Tyrone Warren and proved to be all the Pirates would need. Pirate keeper Wilson had another brilliant performance, recording 10 saves, and he had plenty of help. Matt Stefanko made a sensational play when Wilson was caught away from the net and Stefanko slid in behind him to earn a save of his own on a Highline shot from point blank range. Also playing very well defensively for Peninsula were Dustin Walsh, who used his speed and athleticism to thwart numerous Highline attacks, Jacob Campbell, who played his finest match as a Pirate, and PC Jeff Mullen, who once again came up huge, using his 6-4 body to turn away Highline's aerial attack. A big crowd enjoyed a hotly contested match that was mared by a scuffle in the final minutes of the first half that saw red cards issued to players from both teams. Calmer heads prevailed in the second half and it wasn't until the 78th minute when Sean Prizeman came off the bench and booted home an insurance goal off a Gonzalez assist that Pirate fans breathed a bit easier. For the match, the shots were even at 13-13, and the match was everything it was billed to be, with two well-coached and very talented teams going toe-to-toe for 90 minutes. The Pirates (7-0-0, 13-0-0) travel to Olympic on Wednesday.

Pirates rally to drop Tacoma 2-0

PORT ANGELES - Tacoma did something no team has done recently, they held the Pirates scoreless throughout the first half and made the NWAACC's top-ranked fans nervous for 90 minutes as the PC men rallied for two second-half scores to nip the Titans 2-0. Sophomore keeper Jared Wilson made some spectacular saves, reminding all who watched why he was the MVP of the 2010 NWAACC championship match. Wednesday's shutout was Wilson's seventh and the 14th of his career, but it didn't come easy, as he made good on 12 saves. The Pirate offense, meanwhile, outshot the Titans 27-16, but was stymied by a tough back row and strong keeper play by TCC's Alex Vogt. Following a scoreless first half, the NWAACC's leading scorer, PC sophomore Miguel Gonzalez, put in his own rebound to make it 1-0 just 7 minutes into the second half. Gonzalez then drilled his 22nd goal of the season when he took a through pass from Dean Gaynor, beat a charging Vogt to the ball, chipped it past him and then tapped the ball into an empty TCC net for the insurance goal with 23 minutes remaining. The Pirates (6-0-0, 12-0-1) escaped with a win Wednesday, but will tackle Highline (5-0-0, 7-0-1) Saturday in a match with huge conference championship ramifications without two starters. Prince Ash went down with a severe ankle sprain at practice on Tuesday and Daniel Gonzalez suffered an injury on a harsh Tacoma foul and is questionable for Saturday's game. Kickoff is 2:00.

Dr. Wally Sigmar

Pirates honor Wally Sigmar's memory with pair of wins

PORT ANGELES - Pirate fans, family members and friends of the late Dr. Wally Sigmar could feel him smiling down Saturday as Peninsula College rededicated the newly-referbished Sigmar Field in a special ceremony that was sandwiched between the Pirate women's 4-0 win over Whatcom and the men's 5-0 win over their Orca counterparts.

With both Pirate teams lined up across the new artificial turf field, accompanied by a few dozen children representing Port Angeles Youth Soccer, Peninsula President Dr. Tom Keegan and former Board of Trustees chair Dan Wilder shared stories about their friend Wally in an emotional ceremony that included Jean Sigmar and her boys Erik and John, as well as family friends and even some former players of Wally's. Dr. Sigmar, who was named to the NWAACC Hall of Fame following a very successful coaching career at Skagit Valley Community College, came to Peninsula as the college's fourth president in 1993. He was instrumental in resurrecting intercollegiate athletics in 1997 and the college added a soccer program in 2000, the same year he passed away from a battle with cancer.

Not only would Wally have enjoyed the $1.4 million field improvements, but it's certain he would have enjoyed Saturday's games. The West-leading and eighth-ranked Pirates had trouble shaking Whatcom, clinging to a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal by Ashlyn Frizzell, assisted by Sydney Bullington. The PC women, however, used a pentalty kick by Jackie Rodgers in the 82nd minute to pad their lead - and then they blew it open on goals by Carolina Flores and Shelby Solomon, assisted by Kendra Miner and Flores to win 4-0.

In the men's game, the fireworks started a bit earlier for the NWAACC's top-ranked Pirates, as Daniel Gonzalez made good on a pass from his brother Miguel Gonzalez 15 minutes in. Dean Gaynor made it 2-0 with a blast into the upper right corner of the Orca goal off an assist from Miguel Gonzalez. The next two goals came at the 33-minute and 36-minute marks, both from Peninsula scoring sensation Miguel Gonzalez, who was celebrating his 21st birthday. Both of Miguel's goals were assisted by Gaynor. Coach Andrew Chapman played his bench liberally in the second half, but his team was still able to punch in another goal, this one from Gaynor on an assist from Omar Ambrocio.

The PC women (5-1-0, 6-2-2) and men (5-0-0, 11-0) host Tacoma on Wednesday.

Gonzalez continues to assault record books

MOUNT VERNON - Peninsula's Miguel Gonzalez, who owns both the single season and career scoring records at Peninsula, added a share of the single game scoring record when he booted in all four goals in a 4-1 win at Skagit Valley Wednesday. The PC sophomore scored three in the first half and one in the second as his top-ranked mates rolled over the Cardinals. Dean Gaynor had a hat trick of assists, feeding Gonzalez on his first three goals, and Omar Ambrocio contributed to his second-half tally. The Pirates (4-0-0, 10-0-0) host Whatcom Saturday.

Sigmar Field Rededication set for Oct. 1

PORT ANGELES - Peninsula College will formally rededicate the newly renovated Sigmar Field at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 1. Sigmar Field is named for Dr. Wallace (Wally) Sigmar, who was president of Peninsula College from December 1994 to 2000. He passed away on June 20, 2000. Peninsula College President Dr. Tom Keegan will keynote the special dedication ceremonies. Special guests include Sigmar’s widow, Jean, and members of the Sigmar family as well as long-time family friends. The ceremony will take place following the conclusion of the women’s soccer game against Whatcom Community College and the start of the men’s game. The women’s game begins at 12:00 p.m., and the men’s game is scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m. “Wally was a huge supporter of soccer and was also a NWAACC-winning coach while he was at Skagit Valley Community College,” says PC President Dr. Tom Keegan. “I know he would be proud of the new facility and the fact that so many young and promising athletes will be able to play on this incredible new field. The refurbished playing surface has artificial turf, the first of its kind on the peninsula. It is also one of only a few such playing fields among community and technical colleges in Washington state. “We’re very proud of the facility and pleased that so many in the community and surrounding area also have an opportunity to take advantage of this beautiful playing field,” President Keegan says. Since the field opened April 1, more than 1,400 players have had the opportunity to play on the new surface, including 75 college players, 600 youth, 330 high school-aged players and 400 adults.  The field also has a dedicated walking path around its perimeter, which provides for additional physical fitness options for both players and community members. New lighting, restrooms and improved access to the field were also part of the renovation project, which was completed by Premier Field Development, Inc. from Lake Stevens, WA. Sigmar Field is part of the Wally Sigmar Athletic Complex, which was dedicated in 2000 in honor of President Sigmar.

Pirates pillage Dolphins 5-0 to start season 9-0

PORT ANGELES - Jared Wilson recorded his third straight shutout and his teammates battered Shoreline keeper Bryan Wright with 22 shots on goal, five of them finding the net, in a 5-0 rout of the Dolphins. For the second straight match, the Pirates were taking no prisoners early, scoring goals by Daniel Gonzalez, Omar Ambrocio and two by Miguel Gonzalez to go up 4-0 in the first 21 minutes. The Pirates added a late goal by Sean Prizeman on a nice cross from Mums Chowdhury to ice the cake. Assisting on the first four goals were Miguel Gonzalez, Dustin Walsh, Dean Gaynor and Daniel Gonzalez. Wilson's shutout was not the same as his previous effort against Everett when balls were not coming his way. The Dolphins had a host of point-blank shots that the Anchorage Alaska product was able to knock away. The entire roster saw action and performed well. The Pirates (3-0-0, 9-0-0) travel to Skagit Valley on Wednesday.

No. 1 Pirates flex muscles in 7-0 romp

PORT ANGELES - Wednesday was not a good day to be an Everett Trojan soccer player. The top-ranked Peninsula men came out with all guns blazing in their conference home opener, scoring three goals in the first 13 minutes en route to a 7-0 shutout. The PC men blew through the Everett defense throughout the early going, getting goals from Leavenworth's Omar Ambrocio, Brazil's Sergio Oliveira and Yelm's Miguel Gonzalez. The Pirates added four goals in the second half, two from Ireland's Dean Gaynor, another from Gonzalez and the final tally from Chugiak Alaska's Tyler Hindmarch. The Pirates got two assists from Port Angeles grad Dustin Walsh, two from Miguel Gonzalez, and the others from Daniel Gonzalez, Eric Almadova, and Jacob Campbell. "They played well," said head coach Andrew Chapman. "Anytime you knock in seven goals you're doing something right." The Pirates, now 8-0-0 on the season, host Shoreline at 2:00 on Saturday.

Pirates shake off Edmonds to win 3-0

EDMONDS - The Tritons managed to hang with the NWAACC's top-ranked Pirates for a half, but Peninsula rallied to three second-half goals to drop Edmonds 3-0. "The Edmonds goal keeper had some great saves to keep the score 0-0 at half," coach Andrew Chapman said. " We turned it up in the second half and knocked the ball around and continued to get shots." Miguel Gonzalez got PC on the board with a penalty kick after he was fouled in the box on a breakaway just 10 minutes into the second half. Gonzalez then tallied his 25th career goal (PC record) at the 85th minute on an assist from Tyler Hindmarch. The PC men then put it out of reach at the 87th minute on a goal by Sean Prizeman. Jared Wilson recorded his second shutout as his Pirates improved to 7-0-0. Peninsula is home at 4:00 Wednesday against Everett.

No. 1 Pirates too much for Clippers

LACEY - The top-ranked Pirates turned a 2-1 halftime lead into a 4-1 non-conference romp over the Clippers at South Puget Sound Tuesday. Dean Gaynor opened the scoring just three minutes into the match on an assist from Prince Ash. Then, after giving up a goal, the PC men made it 2-1 in the final minute of the half on a goal by Miguel Gonzalez off an assist from Jake Hughes. The PC men put the match away in the second half with goals by Sergio Oliveira and Sean Prizeman, both assisted by Daniel Gonzalez. The Pirates, now 6-0, open conference play Saturday at Edmonds.

Pirates ranked No. 1 in NWAACC poll

PORT ANGELES - The Pirates, out to a 5-0 start after a 6-1 romp over the Peninsula College Alumni Saturday, were ranked No. 1 in the NWAACC's preseason men's soccer poll. Against the Alum, Sergio Oliveira scored twice, and Miguel Gonzalez, Daniel Gonzalez, Sean Prizeman and Dean Gaynor scored individual goals for the Pirates. The Gonzalez brothers each had one assist, as did Dustin Walsh, Oliveira, Omar Ambrocio and Eric Almadova. The Pirates travel to South Puget Sound Tuesday.

Gonzalez breaks career scoring record
