Pirates mourn loss of Jared Nagel PORT ANGELES – Peninsula College student athlete Jared Nagel was tragically killed in a snowboarding accident at Stevens Pass Feb. 2. Nagel, a 6-2 sophomore forward, was named to the NWAACC South-West All-Star Team in November after helping his Pirates to their best season in history, one that included their first-ever West Region Championship, their first-ever trip to the NWAACC final four and a 14-5-2 record. He was moved from defender to forward during the season and contributed five goals and two assists, in addition to his tenacious play and outstanding leadership. Nagel attended West Salem High School in Salem, Oregon before signing a letter of intent to play for the Pirates in 2006. “Jared was a leader on our soccer team, and one of the key reasons for the team’s success this past season,” head coach Andrew Chapman said. “He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.” More than 1,100 people visited the service for Jared in Salem on Feb. 9 and a Celebration of Life event was also held at Peninsula College on Feb. 12. Donations can be made to the Jared Nagel Alive in Christ missions fund at West Hills Community Church, 1650 Brush College Rd NW in Salem, OR, 97304. Chapman named Coach of Year PORT ANGELES – Peninsula College head soccer coach Andrew Chapman, who’s soccer team won their first West Division championship and went on to place 4th in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges soccer finals, was named NWAACC men’s soccer Coach of the Year, sharing that honor for 2007 with Clark’s Biniam Afenegus. Coach Chapman, who was earlier named West Region Coach of the Year, was announced as recipient of the overall NWAACC coaching honor on Wednesday. He becomes the first Peninsula coach since athletes was reintroduced at Peninsula in 1997, to receive such an honor. He will be formally presented with the award at the NWAACC’s annual spring banquet in Vancouver in May. The 2007 Pirates re-wrote the record book in their West Division title season that came to a heartbreaking end at the NWAACC semifinals when they played top-ranked Spokane scoreless for 89 minutes, only to suffer an inadvertent handball call on the outer edge of the box that resulted in a Sasquatch penalty kick and a 1-0 setback for the Pirates. Peninsula finished 14-5-2 overall and qualified five players to the 2007 All-Star Game. PC men shine at All-Star Game TUKWILLA - Jesse Retan, PC's sophomore midfielder, shined on Saturday in the NWAACC All Star game, played on a snowy field at the Starfire Soccer Complex. Retan got the first assist only 2 minutes into the game when his 35-yard free kick got to the head of a SW Oregon player who was able to head it past the East GK. His goal came at the 36-minute mark when he drilled a fantastic shot from 24 yards out that ended up in the side of the net. The Score was 2-0 at halftime. Ryan O’Neil, sophomore defender, Jared Nagel, sophomore forward, and Ernest Boham, freshman forward also played in the first half. O'Neil was partly responsible for the shutout in the first half. Jared Hoffman, sophomore goalkeeper, played the second half and had some really nice saves and gave up only one goal, which came on a penalty kick in the 79th minute. PC coach Andrew Chapman was on the coaching staff of the South-West team. In Sunday's match for third and fourth places, the Pirates were playing without three starters and fell to Whatcom 2-0. The PC men, led by 10 sophomores and a very strong freshman class, rewrote the record books along the way to the finals and finished with a 14-5-2 record, also their best ever. The PC men will be a big part of the NWAACC All-Star Game, coming up Dec. 1 at 7:30pm, as Jared Hoffman, Ryan O'Neil, Jared Nagel, Jesse Retan and Ernest Boham will represent the black and gold while Coach Chapman will coach the team. Pirates advance to finals with 4-0 win PORT ANGELES - The 4th-ranked Pirates shut out Everett 4-0 on a muddy Wally Sigmar Athletic Complex field Saturday to reach the NWAACC soccer Final Four for the first time in school history. With a huge crowd lining the south sideline, Peninsula drew first blood on a goal by Jesse Retan, who picked his way through Everett defenders and blasted the ball past Trojan keeper Diego Torres. The PC men then struck again in the final seconds of the first half when Teagan Cambier kept the ball alive in front of the Everett goal and Jon Larsen put it in the net for a 2-0 halftime lead. Both teams continued to play tough defense in the second half and it wasn't until the 69th minute of the match when Ernest Boham blew through the Trojan defense, drew the keeper out and then juked his way past him for a 3-0 PC lead. The Pirates then put it out of reach when Steve Walker broke loose, carried the ball up the field and then put it in the corner of the goal for the fourth score of the match, with just 3:00 remaining. Sophomore keeper Jared Hoffman and his sophomore-led defense, which includes Ryan O'Neil, Brian Graham, Tony Quickel, and Dylan Ogle, recorded a school-record ninth shutout. Peninsula also got great play out of midfielders Trevor Quickel, David Lent, Jesse Retan, Taylor Bodily, Hugo Vasquez, Jon Larsen and Buck Kunz, as well as forwards Ernest Boham, Jared Nagel, Steve Walker and Teagan Cambier. Pirates face Everett in quarterfinal playoff The West Division champion Peninsula Pirates make their first appearance in the quarterfinal level of the NWAACC playoffs Saturday at 1:00 at home against Everett, following the Trojans' 5-2 overtime shootout win over Southwestern Oregon in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday. The Pirates, ranked fourth in the NWAACC, met Everett in the preseason. “We played Everett in preseason and won 3-2 only giving up three shots in the game,” PC coach Andrew Chapman said. “Everett has a good-sized bench, but only has one sophomore, so they’re very young.” The Pirates (13-3-2) have scored 57 goals this season, while Everett (8-12-2) has scored 27. Both teams have strong defenses, with PC recording eight shutouts and Everett seven. "Unlike Everett, we have a very high-powered offense that is great at getting into the box and putting the ball away,” Chapman said. The quarterfinal winner will advance to the final four, set for Nov. 17-18 at the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwilla. On the road to their first division championship, the Pirates have re-written their own record book, including most goals in a season (57), fewest goals in a season (19), most shutouts for a goal keeper (Jared Hoffman, 8 season, 11 career), most goals in a season (Ernest Boham, 12), most assists in a season (Jesse Retan, 13), most shots taken by the team (270), fewest shots given up by the team (average 6 per game). Nov. 3: Highline 5, PC 1 PORT ANGELES - The Peninsula vs. Highline match loomed large as the season progressed with both teams trading places as West Division leaders. However, when the Pirates clinched the conference championship at Bellevue Wednesday, the 2007 regular season finale turned into a mere tune-up - and chance to rest starters and players with injuries. The visiting Thunderbirds did a little less resting then the host PC men, winning 5-1 and snapping Peninsula's eight-game winning streak. The fourth-ranked Pirates finished their regular season with a 13-3-2 record and will spend the week preparing for a home playoff match Saturday at 1:00 against the winner of Wednesday's playoff between Southwest Oregon and Everett. In Saturday's match, Peninsula's only goal came from Jon Larsen on a penalty kick two minutes into the second half. Highline led 2-0 at halftime and broke the game open with two more goals in the first six minutes of the second half. The two teams battled all the way to the end when, with 3:30 to play, Jesse Retan took the ball to the BCC end line, turned it back and dished to Ernest Boham for the game-winning goal as darkness was descending on Bellevue. The Pirates then held on to clinch the West championship with one match remaining on their schedule. PC (13-2-2) will finish out its regular season at home at 2:00 Saturday against second-place Highline and will then host a second-round playoff match at 1:00 on Nov. 10 against the winner of a first-round match between the North Division’s second-place team, Everett, and the South Division’s third-place team, Southwest Oregon.

The wind and rain subsided in the second half and Pierce came to life. To the delight of a small throng of diehard fans, Peninsula added an insurance goal when Jordan Clark was tripped up in the box and Larsen calmly directed the ball past a diving Raider keeper Robbie Hines for a 2-0 PC lead with 12 minutes to play in the match.
