Jim Cheney is entering his fifth year with the Pirate softball program. He took over as head coach in the spring of 2008, returning to a post he prevously served from 2003-2006, where his teams went from 10 wins his first year to 20 his second year and 18 his third, qualifying for the NWAACC Softball Tournament for the first time. Cheney left the program in 2006 to see his daughter Julia pitch for the University of Pennsylvania. Coach Cheney has 23 years of coaching experience under his belt, including two state championships, one regional championship and a fourth place finish at the Junior Babe Ruth World Series with a 16-under team in 2001. He is employed full time at Nippon Paper and will serve Peninsula College in a part-time status.

Lance Gardner

Assistant Coach

Coach Gardner has 10 years of fastpitch coaching experience, including five years at Sequim High School before joining the Pirate staff in 2008. He also coached youth softball in Sequim where his Little League junior division team won state and regional championships. The Southern California native played baseball in high school and attended Ventura Junior College before moving to Sequim in 1988. He is employed at the Oak Table Cafe.

Assistant Coach

This is Joel’s second season with the Pirate Softball Team. She has 20 years playing experience and three years coaching. Joel graduated from Sequim High School in 1997, went on to play softball at Palomar College in San Diego, CA, and then finished her education at San Diego State University. In 2004, she returned to the area with her husband to be closer to family. She is employed at Olympic Medical Center.
