STUDIUM GENERALE

The award-winning Studium Generale program is celebrating its thirty-fifth year of providing programs in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Current Issues. Programs are held in the Little Theater (J-16) on the college campus each Thursday. All programs are free and open to the public on a seat availability basis. Programs are subject to change.

The time has been changed from noon to 12:35 pm, with the programs now running from 12:35 to 1:25 pm.

El Último : Thursday, September 24, 2009
Teatro Milagro presents their new work, El Último, a bilingual eco-drama set in the Chilean Patagonia, which focuses on the conflict between Mapuche spirits, indigenous peoples, a Chicana environmentalist, and a soul-searching logger. What results is a culture clash that challenges each player's integrity in their quest for utopia. Cosponsored with the ASC.

We are happy to welcome our own Port Angeles celebrity, Tess Gallagher. She will introduce two books to us—her own book of collected short stories, The Man From Kinvara: Selected Stories (Graywolf Press) and Raymond Carver’s American Library Edition, The Collected Stories. The book, Beginners, which includes stories newly restored to his original manuscripts, is contained in the latter volume.

People of Clallam County : Thursday, October 15, 2009
The Story People of Clallam County will offer a “sneak preview” of the 15th International Forest Storytelling Festival of which Peninsula College is a major sponsor. Held October 15-16, the Festival features performances and workshops by internationally renowned story tellers and draws listeners from throughout the Northwest.

Eucational Director of The Paradise Theater School, Pattie Miles Van Beuzekom : Thursday, October 22, 2009
Peninsula College drama instructor Dr. Lara Starcevich will interview the artistic and educational director of The Paradise Theater School, Pattie Miles Van Beuzekom. The School encourages theatrical risk taking in students and promotes audience education through live performance and classes. Dr. Starcevich and Van Beuzekom will cover topics of common interest, such as improvisation, playwriting, and acting.

Photo Journalist, Thomas Hurst : Thursday, October 29, 2009
Thomas Hurst has photographed wars and natural disasters from Bosnia to Haiti, Afghanistan and Rwanda. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his contribution to The Seattle Times staff’s coverage of the WTO riots in 1999. His work has been honored several times by World Press Photo, The Associated Press and the Society of Professional Journalists.

In 1997, he worked as a staff photographer for The Boston Globe. Two years later, following his coverage of the war in Kosovo, he began working for The Seattle Times.

He spent a month in Iraq in 2004, and in 2005 covered the devastating earthquake in the Kashmir region of Pakistan, earning him the Photograph of the Year award by Editor and Publisher magazine.

Hurst first picked up a camera at the age of 21 when he went to Bosnia in 1992. After returning to Bosnia a second time in 1993, he decided to study photojournalism at San Francisco State University. During winter and summer breaks, he traveled to Haiti, Afghanistan and Rwanda and also interned at daily newspapers. His work has appeared in such publications as Time magazine, The New York Times and The Boston Globe.

Tribal Artist, Jeff Monson : Thursday, November 05, 2009
Tribal artist Jeff Monson will discuss his art and work.

Monson looks on his art as a tradition he is carrying on. “When people look at my work, I’d like them to think that this is what people were doing 500, 600, even 700 years ago,” he says.

Monson’s work is currently featured in the Peninsula College Longhouse Art Gallery. The solo exhibition will close November 30.

Author Tim McNulty : Thursday, November 19, 2009
Award-winning Olympic Peninsula nature writer and poet Tim McNulty will be the featured presenter at Peninsula College’s Studium Generale program.

McNulty will talk about his newly revised book, Olympic National Park: A Natural History, starting at 12:35 in the Little Theater. The book won a Governor's Writers Award when it was first released in 1996.

McNulty has teamed with photographer Pat O'Hara to produce an award-winning series of books on other national parks, including Yellowstone: Land of Fire and Falling Water; Grand Canyon: Window on the River of Time; and Grand Teton: Where Lightning Walks. Their 1998 book on Washington's Mount Rainier National Park: A Centennial Celebration won a National Outdoor Book Award.

McNulty will be Peninsula College’s tenth Writer in Residence in April 2010.
