It’s never too soon to plan for your transfer to another college. The following are some tips that can help you initiate the process.
Decide Your Major Once you’ve decided on a major, it will dictate the specific courses that you need to complete in order to make an efficient transfer. Be sure to speak with your Peninsula College academic advisor about the correlations between careers and majors in order to find out what major program is best for you. Plan Ahead This may seem obvious, but many students are surprised when they discover that certain classes don’t transfer, or that they took the wrong classes in preparation for their program, or that they’ve missed a deadline. Be sure to contact your prospective college or university and even make a visit. Conduct an Internet search for college information. Click here for Washington, Oregon and Idaho college resources and here for Washington Community and Technical Colleges. Make Sure Your College Choice is Right for YOU Be certain that your major is offered at your chosen institution. Avoid choosing a school based on peer/parent pressure. While it is good to listen to the advice of others, you should make educated decisions that make your choice right for you. Campus visits and tours are a good way for you to find out whether or not you wish to attend an institution. Be Sure the Price is Right Develop a financial plan that includes the costs of tuition, books and fees, housing, and other living expenses. Though a particular university may have cheaper tuition than another, the area's cost of living may be much higher. It is also important to check a prospective school’s available financial aid packages. Don’t forget to ask about scholarships! Click here for information on Paying for your Education. More information is available regarding Financial Aid and Scholarships. Know What Questions to Ask and Who to Ask Formulate a list of important questions that you need your transfer institution to address: financial planning, housing, transfer of credits, and your major choice are just a few subjects. Cover all of your bases during your advising sessions at Peninsula College, too. Formulate a Transfer Plan If you list your transfer needs, and then carry out these tasks in order, you will find that the transfer process will be far less stressful. Knowing what you have to do will decrease anxiety. Ask your Peninsula College academic advisor to help you develop a transfer plan. Be Motivated You must have the motivation in order to make your transfer plan work. A successful transfer is dependent upon your ability to make and complete your plans.
